Norman Dickerson - Chairman of the Fire Services National Museum Trust

Originally from London , joined the Hertfordshire Fire & Ambulance Brigade in 1970, at the age of 26, after a career mainly in engineering.

He moved to Leicestershire in 1975 and served at stations in Leicester before taking up a post in Staff Office at Brigade Headquarters in 1979. He held a number of senior posts within the brigade, including Senior Staff Officer and Divisional Commander, North Division.

In 1987 he was promoted to Assistant Chief Fire Officer, in 1988 he became Acting Deputy Chief Fire Office and was appointed Chief Fire Officer in December 1989.

He was an Advisor to the national level of the local government association and chairman of the Chief and Assistant Chief Fire Officer's Association Appliances, Equipment and Uniform Committee and National Breathing Apparatus Group.

In June 1997 he was awarded the Queen's Fire Service Medal in the Birthday Honours list.

He retired in December 1998 and is spending a great deal of his time on matters connected with the Trust.
